How long does cosmetics last?
Unopened cosmetics are either good until the MHD (best before date) or the PAO symbol applies. The PAO symbol is an open jar with an indication like "6M" and means that the product can be safely used for at least 6 months after opening. This symbol can also be found on all "Queen of Green" products.
If you are unsure, don't just rely on the labeling, but also on your senses:
Does the product still smell, look, and feel normal?
If you are unsure, it's better not to continue using it, even if the MHD or PAO has not yet been exceeded.
How to tell if a cosmetic product has gone bad
Typical signs of a spoiled product include:
-
Smell: rancid, sour, or noticeably different from usual
-
Color: visibly changed, for example, darkened or faded
-
Texture: lumpy, streaky, separated, or unusually thin or thick
-
Skin sensation: Burning or itching → discontinue immediately
-
Packaging: bloated tube or leaky dispenser
Extend shelf life – practical tips
-
Store in a cool, dark place, avoid direct sunlight.
-
Only use a spatula for jars and close the lid immediately.
-
Clean skin before application; do not speak or cough into the packaging.
-
Low-water products like balms or oils are often more stable than water-rich formulations.
-
Note the opening date, for example, with a marker on the packaging.
-
After PAO or MHD expires: Perform a sensory check and, if in doubt, dispose of it.
FAQ on Cosmetic Shelf Life
Does MHD mean the product is unusable afterwards?
Not necessarily. Unopened and stored correctly, it may still be fine. A sensory check is crucial.
How long do oils last?
That depends on the composition. Jojoba oil is relatively oxidation-stable. Highly unsaturated oils like sea buckthorn are more sensitive. Vitamin E can improve stability as an antioxidant.
Do natural cosmetic products need to be refrigerated?
Usually not. Storing them in a cool, dark, and dry place is sufficient. Strong cooling can change the viscosity and thus the texture.
